Former minister of petroleum, Prof. Tam David-West, yesterday kicked against the proposed World Bank office in Aso Rock, saying the plan would erode the nation’s sovereignty.
A national magazine had quoted President Goodluck Jonathan, in its recent publication, that an office would soon be created for the World Bank in Aso Rock to monitor contracts.

Reacting to the plan yesterday, David-West expressed surprise that the President could agree to such proposal and warned of the consequence of the action on the nation’s sovereignty.
“I am surprised that President Jonathan could even say that World Bank would have an office in Aso Rock. It is obvious he does not understand the implications of what he is saying.

“It has also led to my concern that his Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the national economy, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who has been widely suspected to be implementing World Bank programmes, is not here in the interest of Nigerian state. She is here as an agent of the World Bank because if World Bank has an office in Aso Rock, that corrodes the sovereignty of Nigeria. Nigeria sovereignty will be lost and Nigeria will no longer claim its sovereignty anymore. Jonathan does not understand,” the former minister said.
He reiterated his call for the sack of Okonjo-Iweala, saying the Finance Minister has all along been lying to Nigerians.
According to the Professor of Virology, the analysis given by the Finance Minister to justify the creation of World Bank office in Aso Rock was faulty.

He stated that the scenario in Greece, which made the World Bank to demand for an office at the seat of government in Greece, was not the same with Nigeria.
“President Jonathan must not be allowed to surrender Nigeria’s sovereignty to the World Bank. I have kept on saying that Jonathan should sack Okonjo-Iweala. She had lied three times to Nigerians. She said subsidy money was N1.3trillion. She lied on the price of oil. She said subsidy, which never existed, would be removed in April 2012 and when it was removed in January, she claimed she didn’t say so.

She lied again on the problem in Greece, which is not similar to that of Nigeria,” David-West added.
